St Paul's lessons about perseverance

January 22, 2006

There are several common factors you will notice when reading the backgrounds not only of the well known names doing business successfully on the Internet but of people who have achieved success in all aspects of life. One of the most prominent characteristics of the successful is perseverance.

Perseverance to overcome a multitude of obstacles from the annoying to the daunting is a character trait every successful person possesses.  St Paul stands out as an example of perseverance in the Bible to inspire you when faced with obstacles to building your Online business.

The Biblical Guide To Internet Riches emphasizes the need identify your Heart’s Desire as the starting point for your success. You have to feel strongly enough about something deep inside to give you the reason to drive on in face of adversity whether it is the potential of losing your job, paying a stack of bills or a going on a dreamed about vacation.

St Paul is an interesting example of using your heart’s Desire as motivation. At first Saul’s desire was to persecute the new Christian sect. The deep down desire to stamp out this sect drove him like a fury. Saul, later Paul, had a conversion experience that changed his Heart’s Desire but did not diminish the fire that drove him inside.

Following his conversion, instead of stamping out the new sect, Paul was consumed with the desire to spread the word of Jesus throughout the known world. This was not an easy task however. Let’s take a look and see what Paul endured to achieve his Heart’s Desire.

  • His disciples lowered him over the wall in Damascus to escape a plan to kill him

  • He was beaten with rods in Jerusalem

  • He was stoned and left for dead

  • He was shipwrecked enroute to Rome

  • He was kept in chains for 2 years

  • He continued his tent trade in many places so he would not be a burden to the community and preached well into the evenings after his work was done.

  • He was beheaded in Rome

This is quite a list of obstacles to overcome to achieve your Heart’s Desire.

Think about the obstacles that face you in your life. Take heart from the example of St Paul. Find what that powerful motivator is deep inside of you. Latch on to it and never let it go. Use it to overcome any obstacle that dares to stand in front of you. There is a way to defeat any obstacle if you have the desire and persevere.

When you finish reading this, write down a list of obstacles you face. What is your plan to overcome them? You can’t wish them away. Summon the energy of your Heart’s Desire and be like St Paul by persevering until the end – never give up!

Finally, heed the advice of St Paul in his letter to the Philippians 4:8 where he tells us:

“Finally, my brothers, your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure admirable, decent, virtuous or worthy of praise.”
