How Many Masters Are You Serving?

4 March 2006

Greetings on a beautiful East Tennessee day!

There are two verses from the New Testament that caught my attention as I was thinking about lessons for Internet success for this issue of Success His Way Journal.

In like Luke 16:13 we read:

“No servant can serve 2 masters. He will either hate the one and love the other or he will be attentive to one and despise the other.”

And in John 6: 68 - 69:

“Simon Peter answered him, “Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe; we are convinced you are God’s holy one.”

I am sure you are probably scratching your heads trying to figure out the connection these verses have to achieving Internet success.

Think about the underlying message in each of the verses. Focus is the common theme. In the verse from Luke, we see that when we have too many priorities in our lives, as we all often do, some of the priorities will suffer. We just can’t do too many things at one time or some will be neglected - we will be more attentive to one than another.

I have always been moved by Peter’s words; “Lord to whom shall we go”. Peter is saying once again that Jesus needs to be the focus for us – for there is no other to go to for the words of eternal life.

Use these verses to evaluate your journey to online success from 2 aspects.

First, are you focused on building one program at a time (I hope The Biblical Guide to Internet Riches affiliate program is one of themJ)? You cannot have too many irons in the fire, as they say, or you will not make progress on any of them.

You cannot be a servant to many different masters. And trust me, if you want to be successful on the Internet, program are like masters. They take time, care and feeding if you want to be successful.

The second thing I would like for you to think about is who your online mentors are and how many do you have? Are you subscribing to too many e-zines? For example, if you have decided you want to focus on making money using Affiliate programs, are your e-zine subscriptions focused on this one area? Are you listening to too many “experts”?

Choose 1 or 2 e-zine publishers you feel comfortable with and stick with them. Cancel other e-zine subscriptions and FOCUS. Now if you have read “The Biblical Guide To Internet Riches” you will know I recommend that you subscribe to subject matter related e-zines in addition to your main focus.

Here is what I mean by this. If you are developing your own product to sell, for example, you will probably want to subscribe to newsletters that will help you be successful selling your product like e-zines related to list building, using advertising, publishing a newsletter etc. Keep your subscriptions tightly focused on subjects you need to be a success.

To continue this example, if you are developing your own digital book to sell, you should most likely not be subscribing to e-zines about how to be successful with Multi Level Marketing.

Think about where your focus is – you can’t serve 2 masters!

Finally, heed the advice of St Paul in his letter to the Philippians 4:8 where he tells us:

“Finally, my brothers, your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure admirable, decent, virtuous or worthy of praise.”
